When did Ione Belarra become Podemos leader?
Background
Podemos secretary-general Ione Belarra said on 8 July her party will not back Spain's housing decree "actively or passively" if it hands landlords personal-income-tax deductions for cutting rents. That single veto matters because the governing Coalition needs Junts' seven seats for its majority, and Junts demands exactly those deductions.
Born 25 September 1987 in Pamplona, Belarra has sat in Spain's Congress of Deputies since 2015 and served as Minister of Social Rights and 2030 Agenda from 2021 to 2023. She became Podemos secretary-general in June 2021, succeeding founder Pablo Iglesias, elected with roughly 88.7% of the membership's vote.
Her stance leaves the housing decree caught between two demands that cannot both be met, with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs still insisting the decree will pass before the end of August.
