Pandemics and BiosecurityBackground
Trapeang Prasat is a district of Oddar Meanchey province in northern Cambodia. It had 25,533 people at the 2008 census.
The district entered the record of human bird flu in September 2026. Cambodia's health ministry said the patient confirmed on 27 September was 49, from Tuol Kruos village in O'Svay commune, and raised chickens; the birds had tested positive for H5N1 four days earlier.
His case took Cambodia's total since 2003 to 40 human cases and 15 deaths, with six of those cases in 2026 alone. It places Trapeang Prasat among the Cambodian districts where the virus has passed from poultry to people.
Trapeang Prasat produced Cambodia's sixth human case
The district's human case followed an outbreak in its own poultry. H5N1 was confirmed in local chickens on 23 September 2026, and on 27 September the health ministry confirmed the virus in a poultry farmer WHO had handled sick and dead birds.
That case made Cambodia the source of six of the 11 human H5N1 cases Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection counted worldwide in 2026 to 1 October, against 81 worldwide in 2024. It came as poultry outbreaks resumed in France, Sweden, Bulgaria and Canada at the start of the northern autumn season, a sign the virus remains active in birds.
