Background
Nakilat's LNG carrier Al Rekayyat was struck by an Iranian missile in the Strait of Hormuz on 7 July 2026 while carrying Qatari gas; the vessel caught fire but all crew were reported safe.
Qatar Gas Transport Company Limited, known as Nakilat, was established in 2004 and listed on the Qatar Stock Exchange in 2005 as the vehicle for shipping Qatar's gas exports. It now owns and operates one of the world's largest LNG fleets, some 69 LNG carriers plus LPG vessels, representing roughly 12% of global LNG shipping capacity, having progressively taken over ship management of its fleet from Shell between 2012 and 2020.
As the world's largest LNG shipping company, an attack on any Nakilat vessel reaches well beyond Qatar: its carriers move gas that heats homes and fuels power stations worldwide, making the company a bellwether for how the Hormuz conflict prices global energy risk.
