What is the difference between Lupa Systems and Penske Media's Vox deal?
Background
Lupa Systems paid more than $300m in June 2026 to acquire New York magazine, Vox.com and the Vox Media Podcast Network from Vox Media. The transaction split Vox Media in two: Lupa took the editorial and audio assets while Penske Media Corporation simultaneously acquired The Verge, Eater, SB Nation, Popsugar, The Dodo and Thrillist, folding them into a new subsidiary called PMX.
Lupa Systems is the private investment vehicle of James Murdoch, who departed News Corp and 21st Century Fox in 2020 following public disagreements with his father Rupert Murdoch over the companies' editorial direction. Based in New York, Lupa invests across media, technology and climate. Previous media-sector investments have included stakes in Vice Media and Indian streaming platforms via Bodhi Tree Systems. James Murdoch and his wife Kathryn serve as the firm's principals.
The acquisition of New York magazine and Vox.com at a moment of digital media consolidation represents a counter-cycle bet on long-form journalism. Combining New York's cultural and political commentary with Vox.com's policy and analysis coverage and the Vox podcast network gives Lupa a prestige portfolio that spans upmarket lifestyle, political wonk and audio audiences. The deal arrived as advertising revenues for digital publishers remain under sustained pressure from social media platforms.
