US Midterms 2026Background
Kamala Harris held the vice-presidency for one term, sworn in on 20 January 2021 and leaving office on 20 January 2025. She became the Democratic presidential nominee after Joe Biden ended his re-election bid in July 2024, and lost the November 2024 election to Donald Trump.
Because she was the last Democrat at the top of the ticket, her vote share in each district is the baseline against which 2026 results are measured. In New Jersey's 11th she took 53.3% to Trump's 44.6% in 2024, against Biden's 17-point margin there in 2020; a 20-point Democratic hold in the April 2026 special election therefore counted as an 11-point overperformance on her result.
Before the vice-presidency she represented California in the US Senate from January 2017 to January 2021. In July 2025 she ruled out running for governor of California in 2026.
