Abdul El-Sayed contested the Democratic nomination for Michigan's open United States Senate seat in 2026, campaigning from the party's Left.
His candidacy ran outside the state party's institutional machinery rather than through it. The senior endorsements available in Michigan went elsewhere, which Left him dependent on direct appeal to primary voters, and by the eve of the vote he led comfortably in public polling regardless. Candidates in that position tend to be read nationally as tests of whether a party's activist base and its officeholders still want the same things.
