Why did J&J back Trimtech Therapeutics?
When was Johnson & Johnson Innovation founded?
Background
Johnson & Johnson Innovation (JJDC) took a board seat at Trimtech Therapeutics, a Cambridge biotech, after adding $14m to the company's extended seed round, which grew to GBP35.6m alongside UK growth investor BGF.
JJDC is the strategic venture Arm of Johnson & Johnson, the US pharmaceutical and healthcare group, founded in 1973 and investing across pharmaceuticals, medical devices, consumer health and digital health from new-company creation through to later-stage rounds. It runs dedicated teams out of life-Science hubs including Boston, San Francisco, Shanghai and London, giving portfolio companies access to J&J's global development and commercial infrastructure.
Trimtech's board seat fits a wider pattern of corporate pharmaceutical capital, rather than UK domestic venture, funding the deep end of British biotech: a large drugmaker buying early visibility into a technology platform, in this case targeted protein degraders for neurodegenerative and inflammatory disease, that it may later licence or acquire outright.
