The BioIndustry Association describes itself as the voice of the UK's innovative life sciences and biotech industry, representing more than 600 member companies spanning biotech, TechBio, biopharma, research institutes and supporting service providers.
It runs policy advocacy with government, industry events and a purchasing scheme for members, positioning itself as a primary channel between the industry and UK life sciences policy through regular data on funding, employment and R&D investment across the sector.
The association's standing rests on being the sector's main collective voice rather than any single company's, which is what gives its funding and policy data weight with government and investors beyond what any one member firm could claim alone.
BIA data reveals funding concentration
BIA and accountancy firm Frazier & Deeter published the finding in a joint report on 10 September, setting the median UK life sciences round at just £0.6 million against a £8.8 million mean, a more than fourteen-fold gap . As the industry's trade body, the BIA frames its own membership data around advocacy: it recorded 60 meetings with policymakers and 40 events reaching over 5,500 people in 2025.
The concentration finding gives the BIA a fresh policy argument: that a handful of large deals now define the funding picture for its 600-plus members, while most companies raise well below the mean.
