Background

John Amos is the oil spill specialist and founder of the US non-profit SkyTruth. Reuters reported on 12 August 2026 that his review of satellite imagery put the Caroline Bezengi slick off Oman at more than 2,000 square kilometres, over five times Oman's own Environment Authority estimate of 390 square kilometres. He is not the Haaretz military correspondent Amos Harel, who covers Israeli defence affairs and shares only a surname. The gap between his figure and Oman's has not been reconciled by either side.
