Golden Boot

The FIFA World Cup Golden Boot is awarded to the tournament's leading scorer, decided on total goals scored in the current tournament. When players are level on goals, assists then minutes played serve as tiebreakers. The trophy historically goes to a player on six or more goals.

Lionel Messi entered the Round of 32 as both the Golden Boot frontrunner and the outright all-time World Cup top scorer in history: a free kick against Jordan on 27 June pushed his career total to 19 goals across six tournaments, clear of Miroslav Klose's previous record of 16. The record had been tied at 18 goals earlier in the group stage before Messi broke it outright. Kylian Mbappé, on 16 career World Cup goals, sat second on the all-time list going into the knockouts. The expanded 48-team format in 2026 provides more matches in the knockout rounds than any previous edition, giving frontrunners more opportunities to pull clear.

By the quarter-finals, the 2026 Golden Boot race had become the first World Cup with three players on seven or more tournament goals: Messi and Mbappé level on eight, and Erling Haaland on seven. Mbappé drew level with Messi after his quarter-final strike against Morocco on 9 July and briefly led the race on the assist tiebreak. The 2026 race carried an unusual generational weight: Messi at 38 and Cristiano Ronaldo, also competing in what he had called his final tournament , were at the end of their careers, while Mbappé at 27 was building towards his peak World Cup years.

By the semi-finals, the tiebreak had swung again: Mbappé briefly led the assist count three-to-two after France's semi-final exit to Spain Left him only the third-place match to add to his tournament tally.

Mbappé's Golden Boot was settled on 19 July when Messi failed to score in the final. Mbappé closed the tournament on ten goals, having scored twice in the third-place playoff against England on 18 July, a brace that also took his career World Cup tally to 22 and the outright all-time record, above Messi's 21. The award made Mbappé the first player to win the Golden Boot at two separate World Cups, 2022 and 2026, for a France side that had already been eliminated in the semi-finals and finished fourth. Messi took the Silver Ball rather than the Golden Boot runner-up medal. The Golden Boot (this tournament's top scorer) and the all-time World Cup career scoring record (goals accumulated across every tournament a player has appeared in) are separate honours; both changed hands, to Mbappé, within a day of each other on 18-19 July.
