Background

Directive (EU) 2024/1788 is the recast EU directive setting common rules for the internal markets in renewable gas, natural gas and hydrogen. Article 94 sets 5 August 2026 as the Deadline for member states to transpose provisions covering unbundling, TSO and DSO certification, third-party network access, tariff principles, storage and LNG facility access, and supplier switching. As of 3 August 2026 only Portugal and Slovakia had notified the Commission of transposing measures, with the other 25 member states yet to file . Article 93, which amends the Energy Efficiency Directive (EU) 2023/1791 directly, applies from 5 August 2026 regardless of national transposition progress . It is the companion instrument to the directly applicable Regulation (EU) 2024/1789, and the two should not be confused.
