Background

Regulation (EU) 2024/1789 is the companion regulation to Directive (EU) 2024/1788 in the EU's 2024 gas and hydrogen package. As a directly applicable regulation it needs no national transposition. Article 89 set general application from 5 February 2025, with most of Section 5 and Articles 11(3)(b), 34(6) and 84 applying from 1 January 2025, and Articles 42, 43, 44, 52, 53 and 54 from 4 August 2024. It has therefore been in force for between six and eighteen months already; it is the Directive's 5 August 2026 transposition Deadline that is new, not this Regulation . That is a sharp contrast with the Directive, where only two of 27 member states had notified transposition by 3 August 2026 .
