Claudio Tapia gave Infobae an on-the-record account on 19 July 2026 of why the Argentina-Spain Finalissima never happened, framing the Argentine Football Association's position as holding out for a genuinely neutral venue after Lusail was ruled out. Hours later, after Argentina lost the World Cup final 1-0 to Spain, he posted 'De pie, Argentina, con la cabeza en alto' (standing tall, heads held high); the AFA's own statement said the result 'no alcanzo' to make Argentina two-time champions.

Tapia has been AFA president since March 2017, having previously run Primera c club Barracas Central for close to two decades. He also presides over the Liga Profesional de Futbol, Argentina's top-flight governing body, and has been a member of the FIFA Council representing CONMEBOL since 2025. His AFA presidency has overseen four major trophies for the men's national team: the 2021 and 2024 Copa America, the 2022 Finalissima, and the 2022 World Cup.

His tenure has also drawn sustained controversy, including accusations of refereeing favouritism towards Barracas Central, a prolonged dispute with President Javier Milei's government over plans to allow privately owned football clubs, and, from mid-2026, US federal scrutiny of Sur Finanzas, a financial firm that sponsored the AFA and is accused by Argentina's tax authority of processing hundreds of billions of pesos in unjustified transactions; reports say the FBI has been investigating related transactions. Tapia has not been charged, and the inquiries were ongoing as of July 2026. The stalled Finalissima and Argentina's 2026 final defeat are comparatively minor setbacks in a tenure otherwise defined by those bigger disputes and four major trophies.
