Background

Founded on 9 July 1916, Argentina's independence day, in the middle of the inaugural Copa América, CONMEBOL is the oldest of FIFA's six continental confederations and has the fewest member associations of any of them, ten, from Argentina to Venezuela. It is headquartered in Luque, Paraguay.

It runs the Copa América, South America's premier international tournament, alongside the Copa Libertadores club competition it launched in 1959, and co-organises the Finalissima with UEFA, pitting South America's continental champion against Europe's.

CONMEBOL has used that Finalissima platform, and its position as a confederation whose member states are hosting 2030's opening matches, to press FIFA on tournament format: president Alejandro Domínguez restated the case for a 64-team 2030 World Cup again on 21 July, though this remains the confederation's own advocacy rather than agreed FIFA policy .
