Background

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) and UEFA still have the Argentina-Spain Finalissima outstanding after the planned Lusail venue was ruled out by regional conflict; the two nations meet in the World Cup final instead.

Founded on 9 July 1916, Argentina's independence day, in the middle of the inaugural Copa America itself, CONMEBOL is the oldest of FIFA's six continental confederations and has the fewest member associations of any of them, ten, from Argentina to Venezuela. That first tournament, contested by Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay, was troubled from the outset, with one match abandoned after five minutes because of overcrowding before Uruguay were declared champions following a goalless draw with hosts Argentina. CONMEBOL is headquartered in Luque, Paraguay, and runs the Copa America, South America's premier international tournament, alongside the Copa Libertadores club competition it launched in 1959.

Its co-organisation of the Finalissima with UEFA, pitting South America's continental champion against Europe's, has become a recurring fixture in recent years, though the 2026 edition remains unplayed.
