Lai signs Taiwan's six-year drone law
Autonomous Systems: Land & SeaBackground
Cho Jung-tai leads the Executive Yuan, Taiwan's Cabinet, and in that role countersigns laws before the president promulgates them. He countersigned the drone spending law, which the legislature voted through on 27 August and Lai Ching-te enacted on 11 September 2026.
That law commits NT$240bn to uncrewed systems over six years. In principle NT$40bn of it falls in each year's defence budget, and only that money clause was live on signing; other parts follow from about 11 March 2027. Because Cho's Cabinet drafts every annual budget, the yearly sum depends on the Executive Yuan as much as on legislators.
Cho is the 29th Premier of the Republic of China (Taiwan), in office since 20 May 2024. He was Born in Taipei on 22 January 1959, belongs to the Democratic Progressive Party and holds a law degree from National Chung Hsing University.
