Chechnya appeared in Putin's published weekly calendar for 3 to 11 April 2026 via a phone call to Ramzan Kadyrov, the republic's leader since 2007. The call reflects routine political management of the North Caucasus during a week that included the Orthodox Easter ceasefire decree and Dagestan flooding.
Chechnya's Kadyrovtsy forces (the Akhmat special forces) have been deployed to Ukraine since the earliest weeks of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Their military role has been disputed: Western analysts describe them as primarily a propaganda and morale asset, most effective in urban operations where they have numerical and firepower advantage. Ukrainian forces have described mixed encounters, with the Kadyrovtsy performing poorly in open-field engagements but maintaining visible presence in multiple theatre zones.
The Chechen Republic receives substantial federal transfers from Moscow under the security bargain underpinning Kadyrov's rule. Chechnya fought two wars for independence from Russia between 1994 and 2009. The shift from armed separatism to loyal militarism under Kadyrov has been one of the most complete political reversals in post-Soviet history.
