Background
Bukan (also spelled Boukan) is a city of roughly 200,000 people in the central part of West Azerbaijan province, northwestern Iran. The population is predominantly Kurdish; the city is within the historical Kurdish cultural zone of eastern Kurdistan. Hengaw, the Norway-based Kurdish human rights organisation, monitors Bukan closely as a location where arrests of Kurdish cultural and civil society figures are frequently documented.
On 16 May 2026, Hengaw reported that Kurdish singer Seyed Ali Qoreishi remained incommunicado in Bukan following his arrest, as part of a broader cluster of Kurdish arrests across northwestern provinces. Iranian authorities did not publicly disclose the charges or details of his detention.
Bukan sits approximately 140 km southeast of Urmia and is connected by road to Mahabad, the informal cultural centre of Iranian Kurdistan. During Iran-Iraq War era conflicts, West Azerbaijan was a theatre for Iraqi-backed Kurdish insurgency; the province has remained under heightened security monitoring in subsequent decades.
