Background

Bilbao, the Basque Country's largest city and a major industrial port on Spain's Atlantic coast, hosts the Bahia de Bizkaia Gas (BBG) LNG regasification terminal, one of Spain's six LNG import facilities and the country's highest-utilisation terminal. BBG is co-owned by Enagas (50%) and the Basque Energy Agency (50%) and achieved a 62.3% utilisation rate in recent reporting periods. The terminal has three tanks with a combined capacity of 450,000 m³ and has received over 1,000 LNG cargoes. Bilbao's port and industrial base make it a significant node in Spain's Energy infrastructure.

BBG and Bilbao's terminal capacity contributed to Spain's role as one of Europe's most active LNG import markets since 2022. Spain receives LNG from the United States, Algeria, Qatar, Nigeria, and other sources, and its six terminals give the country significant flexibility to serve as an LNG hub for the wider Iberian Peninsula and, via regasified re-export, southern France.
