Background

Babcock International is a British defence and engineering company with a major role in Royal Navy submarine and ship support. In the autonomous underwater sphere, Babcock is the UK partner for American shipbuilder HII on the ARMOR Force autonomous maritime operations and recovery initiative for the Royal Navy. At the Combined Naval Event in Farnborough from 19 to 21 May 2026, HII presented its REMUS UUV capabilities to the Royal Navy through Babcock, alongside an enlarged HII hub at Portchester positioned as a European base for allied navies.

Babcock's role in ARMOR Force is to provide British industrial presence and Royal Navy access for HII's torpedo-tube-launched REMUS technology. The model gives HII a UK footprint that is harder to displace on sovereignty grounds, while giving Babcock commercial access to the emerging autonomous underwater vehicle market. HII has delivered more than 750 REMUS UUVs globally; Babcock connects that capability to Royal Navy submarine procurement and support contracts it already holds.

Babcock is headquartered in London and has major facilities at Devonport and Rosyth, the two principal Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary maintenance sites. Its existing access to nuclear submarine programmes makes it a logical partner for sub-launched UUV integration.
