Argentine Football Association

The Argentine Football Association (AFA), also known by its Spanish name Asociacion del Futbol Argentino, is Argentina's national governing body for football, responsible for the men's and women's national teams and domestic competitions.

Argentina players were pictured after the semi-final win over England with a "Las Malvinas Son Argentinas" banner, and fans in the stand chanted about the Falklands while midfielder Leandro Paredes said the islands "will always be Argentine". FIFA's Disciplinary Committee opened an active review of the banner on 16 July, but deferred any sanction until after the tournament and cleared the implicated players to play the final. No verdict had surfaced by the tournament's close on 19 July, when the stated reason for the deferral, that the competition was still in progress, expired. Under FIFA's strict-liability disciplinary code, the AFA is the body that would be held responsible for player and supporter Conduct; the closest precedent is FIFA's 2014 fine of CHF 30,000 against the AFA for a homophobic chant during the Brazil World Cup.

The AFA also sits on the other side of the unplayed Argentina-Spain Finalissima: it rejected UEFA's offer of Madrid's Bernabeu as a replacement venue, on the grounds it is a Spain home ground, and sought an unworkable four-day postponement at Rome's Olimpico, according to AFA president Claudio Tapia's own account.
