Background

The Angel of Independence (El Angel de la Independencia) is a victory column on Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City, completed in 1910 for the centenary of Mexican independence and topped by a gilded winged Victory. It is one of the city's most recognisable landmarks and the traditional focal point for national celebrations, above all football.

On 30 June 2026, as a crowd near 1.4 million gathered to mark Mexico reaching the World Cup round of 16, the surge around the monument's base became fatal: three people were asphyxiated near the Angel and a fourth later died in hospital .

The monument is now the focal point of Mexico City's response too: a new two-stage Ultima Milla restricted perimeter meters fan access around its base ahead of Sunday's Mexico-England tie, part of a security uplift that doubled officer numbers on the surrounding boulevard . Its plinth, normally the backdrop to Mexican football joy, became the site of the tournament's first deaths, and now the centre of the effort to prevent a repeat.
