Cuba's 54 solar photovoltaic parks delivered a record 758 megawatt (MW) midday peak, 4,870 megawatt-hours across 18 to 19 July, the first solar-capacity figure the state grid operator Union Electrica Nacional (UNE) has published 1. UNE is the body that issues the daily deficit bulletins Cuba-watchers use to track the collapse, so a headline generation figure from it, rather than only a shortfall, is a departure.
The number lands against a persistent gap. The evening deficit held in the 2,062 to 2,179 MW band over the same two days , the hour when solar output is zero and every household draws at once. Cuba's crisis is structurally a thermal-fleet-at-night problem: the ageing Soviet-design plants carry the peak, and the fuel to run them is exactly the supply the sanctions campaign keeps blocked.
Solar cannot close that hole without storage. Midday generation displaces daytime thermal load, which conserves scarce fuel for the evening, but the parks produce nothing at 20:30, and the battery installations that would shift their output into the peak have no confirmed in-service date. Publishing the 758 MW figure lets the state show visible progress on the one part of the grid it can build quickly, while the deficit that defines daily life sits in the same bulletin.
