Onomichi to build Bulwark robot landers

Japan's Onomichi Dockyard will manufacture Bulwark Dynamics' Caravel autonomous landing craft for US and allied forces, though the first prototype is still being built.

Key takeaway

A Japanese yard has signed up to build a US robot landing craft that is still a prototype.

Onomichi Dockyard, a Japanese commercial shipbuilder in Hiroshima prefecture, will manufacture Bulwark Dynamics' Caravel-35, a 35ft autonomous landing craft with a bow ramp, and the smaller Caravel-15 for US and allied forces, Naval News reported on 21 September1. Bulwark is still building the first 35ft prototype and talks of several dozen units a year.

Onomichi brings yard space. Western shipyards are full, and a Japanese commercial builder gives the Indo-Pacific a second source for a craft that does not yet exist in production form. A bow-ramp landing craft that needs no crew would let a force move supplies onto a contested beach without putting sailors on the ramp. Japan's defence ministry asked in August for research on missile and attack modules for uncrewed underwater vehicles.

Deep Analysis

In plain English

A landing craft is a flat-fronted boat that carries troops, vehicles or supplies from a ship onto a beach, using a ramp at the bow. Bulwark Dynamics designs a version that drives itself. A Japanese shipyard, Onomichi Dockyard, will build it. Bulwark has not finished the first full-size prototype, so production has not begun.

Deep Analysis
Root Causes

Landing craft with a bow ramp carry vehicles or cargo from ship to shore, and building one needs hull-fabrication capacity that a small design firm may not own. Bulwark designs; Onomichi fabricates.

The reports reviewed do not give the terms of the arrangement.

What could happen next?
  • Consequence

A Japanese builder gives US and allied buyers a second place to get the craft made, if Bulwark wins orders.

  • Risk

The plan depends on a prototype that does not yet exist; a design change could delay the whole production line.
