Closed its Erfurt logistics centre citing network realignment, not AI

Zalando is a German online fashion and lifestyle retailer, one of Europe's largest, operating logistics and fulfilment centres across the continent to serve its marketplace and own-brand business.
The company has expanded through acquisition in recent years, most significantly its purchase of rival platform About You, which is reshaping where and how it operates its European logistics footprint.
Site consolidations following that kind of acquisition are a routine feature of retail-logistics integration, distinct from the AI-substitution narrative applied to some other 2026 job cuts.
Zalando ties the closure to M&A
Zalando is closing its Erfurt logistics centre by the end of September 2026, ending 2,100 jobs, after an arbitration panel sealed the site's social plan on 9 July 2026 with about EUR80 million provisioned, EUR30 million of it for severance and transition support .
The company attributes the closure to realigning its logistics network after acquiring rival About You and opening a new site at Giessen, not to AI, even though an AI framing was available and applied to peers making comparable cuts the same fortnight. For Zalando, the closure reads as consolidation logic following a merger rather than a labour-substitution decision.
