Background
The Voting Rights Lab is a non-partisan research and advocacy organisation that tracks state-level voting legislation across all 50 states. It was among the first organisations to identify that eight states were simultaneously redistricting mid-decade in 2025-2026, which it described as an unprecedented wave not seen since the 1800s.
The organisation monitors bills introduced, passed, and signed across every state legislature, maintaining a database of voting-related legislation that is used by journalists, legal advocates, and campaigns. It has flagged the Florida redistricting special session, called by Governor DeSantis for 20-24 April 2026, as a case study in gubernatorial-driven partisan map drawing timed to coincide with the candidate filing Deadline and an anticipated Supreme Court ruling.
The Voting Rights Lab''s analysis underpins much of the reporting on the mid-decade redistricting wave. With maps being redrawn in California, Florida, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Washington, the organisation estimates the round of changes could shift 6-10 competitive districts compared to the maps used in 2024, with the direction depending on which states ultimately produce which partisan outcomes.
