Uithoorn is a municipality in the Dutch province of North Holland, near Amstelveen and Schiphol airport. Like the rest of the province it falls under rule NH2020, which bars data centres above 2,000 square metres or 5 megavolt-amperes from locating in the area.
In the week of 29 July 2026 Uithoorn joined developer Switch Datacenters, grid operator Liander and a collective of local greenhouse growers in signing a heat-network agreement for a planned 60 MVA data centre at De Kwakel-Kudelstaart. The justification is that the site's waste heat would displace gas the growers currently burn, which the four parties treat as grounds for an exception to the province's own building rule .
As the municipality granting the exception, Uithoorn sits at the centre of a route other Dutch localities may now look to copy: trading provincial size limits for a heat-supply commitment rather than contesting the rule itself.
