Background
Thiago Silva was cut from Brazil's final 26-man World Cup squad when Carlo Ancelotti made his announcement on 18 May 2026 at the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro — bringing to an end the defender's international career at 113 caps. Ancelotti also omitted Rodrygo and the injured Éder Militão, while recalling Neymar after a 31-month international absence. Vinicius Júnior, Raphinha and 18-year-old Estêvão were included. The omission was widely expected given his age but still marked the end of an extraordinary international career.
Born 22 September 1984 in Rio de Janeiro, Thiago Silva became one of the finest centre-backs of his generation. He spent eight seasons at Paris Saint-Germain (2012-2020) and three at Chelsea, where he was part of the 2020-21 Champions League-winning squad. He returned to boyhood club Fluminense in Brazil in 2024 to wind down his career at home.
For Brazil, his departure closes a defensive chapter. The 2014 World Cup remains the dominant memory of his international career: suspended for the semi-final against Germany, Brazil lost 7-1 in his absence at the Estádio Mineirão. He spent the rest of his career pursuing the World Cup winner's medal that eluded him throughout.
