Background

Shiraz Prison, formally Adelabad Prison, is the central detention facility in Shiraz, the capital of Fars province in southwestern Iran and the country's fourth-largest city. It is a large multi-use facility holding pre-trial detainees, convicted prisoners and those awaiting execution, and it recurs across security and human-rights reporting rather than being defined by a single case.

The facility has also featured in accounts of lawyer detentions carried out mid-duty, an indication that its role extends beyond ordinary custody into the wartime security apparatus. As with most Iranian provincial prisons, it receives no independent monitoring access from UN or international human-rights observers, so almost everything known about conditions or individual cases inside it comes from monitors such as Hengaw working through sources inside the facility and family contacts.

Wartime executions

Shiraz Prison carried out two executions

Shiraz Prison executed Saeid Rahmanirad, convicted of murder, and one unnamed defendant on 19 May 2026, the same day a separate execution took place at Torbat-e Heydarieh Prison. Hengaw, the Norway-based Kurdish rights monitor, documented both.

The concurrent timing across two provincial prisons places Shiraz among a cluster of facilities Hengaw has tracked carrying out wartime executions away from the capital, where independent monitoring access does not exist and official confirmation of individual cases is rare.
