UK Local Elections 2026Background
North Norfolk is a House of Commons constituency in Norfolk. Liberal Democrat Steff Aquarone won it on 4 July 2024 with 19,488 votes, 41.4% of the total, and a majority of 2,585 over the Conservative Duncan Baker.
Its MP used the seat's platform on 7 September 2026 to put a £600,000 cost on the abandoned Norfolk reorganisation, money he said the district council had been forced to spend.
The constituency should not be confused with North Norfolk District Council, a separate local authority. Spending figures belong to the council; the constituency is the parliamentary seat that elects one MP to Westminster.
The seat's MP prices the failure
Aquarone raised the figure with Housing Secretary Angela Rayner in the Commons on 7 September 2026, saying the district council had been "made to waste £600,000" on a plan ministers then withdrew. Norfolk's plan was dropped that day, along with those for Essex, Hampshire and Suffolk.
The £600,000 is the district council's spending, not the constituency's, and the figure is its MP's account rather than an audited total. For the seat, the episode hands its Liberal Democrat MP a local grievance against the government, with next May's council elections in the county set to run on today's boundaries.
