Why does the NCRI report on Iran's executions?
Background
The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and allied opposition monitors reported that Arghavan Fallahi, a 25-year-old woman linked to the PMOI/MEK, was sentenced to death on 1 July by Branch 15 of Tehran's Revolutionary Court. The NCRI has also relayed Iran Human Rights tallies putting the Khordad execution count at 140 people, revised up from an initial 134.
Founded in 1981 in Paris by MEK leader Massoud Rajavi, the NCRI describes itself as a Coalition government-in-exile and is widely regarded as the political wing of the People's Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI/MEK). Both the NCRI and MEK were listed as terrorist organisations by the US State Department (from 1997) and the EU; the EU delisted the MEK in 2009 and the US followed in 2012 after the group renounced violence.
Because the NCRI is an advocacy body opposed to the Iranian government, its execution and prosecution figures, though widely cited by international media, originate from an avowedly anti-government source and are generally reported as attributed claims rather than independently verified counts.
