Letizia, Queen of Spain, is the wife of King Felipe VI, whom she married on 22 May 2004 at Madrid's Almudena Cathedral. She became queen consort on Felipe's accession to the throne on 19 June 2014, following the abdication of Juan Carlos I.
Born Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano in Oviedo, Asturias, on 15 September 1972, she worked as a journalist for ABC and the EFE news agency before becoming a television news anchor, notably for Televisión Española. That career, rather than European nobility, is what set her apart on marrying into the royal family, and it remains the defining fact of her biography. She and Felipe have two daughters, Leonor and Sofía.
