Iran Conflict 2026: Kuwait's airport shuts as Gulf carriers retreat

Background

Kuwait Airways is the state-owned national flag carrier of Kuwait, based at Kuwait International Airport, operating regional and long-haul routes across the Gulf, Europe and Asia. It has historically served as the country's primary international air link, alongside the state's oil and desalination industries.

Kuwait Airways rescheduled the bulk of its flight programme after Kuwait International Airport suspended takeoffs and landings on 18 July following missile and drone attacks, with air defences intercepting targets and sirens sounding four times that day.

The disruption extended across the Gulf's carriers: Emirates, Etihad Airways and Air Arabia all cancelled or cut Kuwait services over the same period, and operations at Kuwait and at Bahrain International Airport were only recovering by the following Monday morning, with passengers told to check flight status.

As Kuwait's own flag carrier, Kuwait Airways bore the disruption directly rather than simply rerouting around it, in the same way the state-run electricity and desalination system has had to absorb repeated strikes on the Shuaiba plant; both illustrate how a country not itself firing on Iran has still had to carry the operational cost of the war.
