Goncalo Ramos headed a stoppage-time winner as Portugal beat Croatia 2-1 in Toronto, sending Luka Modric's side out of the tournament and Portugal into the last 16, where they meet Spain.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward has specialised in decisive World Cup cameos since a stunning hat-trick as a substitute against Switzerland at the 2022 finals, when he displaced an out-of-favour Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting XI. At 25, he now shares a Portugal forward line with the 41-year-old Ronaldo, who set a record for scoring at six separate World Cups last month, rather than replacing him outright.

Portugal's run continued to lean on the pairing of a fading Ronaldo, playing what he said was his final World Cup, and the younger forwards, Ramos foremost, expected to carry the side beyond his retirement. Transfermarkt added roughly EUR20m to his valuation in its 23 July post-tournament reassessment, grouped with Argentina's Julian Alvarez and England's Morgan Rogers among the risers.
