Julian Alvarez broke Switzerland's resistance from distance in the 112th minute of Argentina's World Cup quarter-final in Kansas City, the goal that put a 10-man Swiss side to the sword before Lautaro Martinez added a third.
Born in Calchin in January 2000, Alvarez rose through River Plate's academy before Manchester City signed him in 2022, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble in his first season. He moved to Atletico Madrid in 2024 for a club-record fee reported at up to 95 million euros and was the club's top scorer in his debut campaign there.
A 2022 World Cup winner alongside Mac Allister, Alvarez is part of an Argentina side that beat Egypt and survived Cape Verde in extra time on the way to a semi-final against England in Atlanta. Transfermarkt added roughly EUR20m to his valuation in its 23 July post-tournament reassessment, alongside rises for England's Morgan Rogers and Portugal's Goncalo Ramos.
