Frankenthal draws on a natural aquifer formation to hold gas, giving it around 300 million cubic metres of total capacity and roughly 90 million cubic metres of working gas, smaller than several of its German counterparts. Enovos Storage runs the site, one of several pore-type facilities scattered across the country rather than concentrated in a single hub.
Under the Gasspeicherfüllstandsverordnung, which took effect on 5 May 2025, Frankenthal sits among the sites judged to need less headroom before winter, so its target for 1 November is set at 45% against the 80% expected of most cavern storage.
