Common Questions
Where is Denpasar in Bali?
Denpasar is the capital city of Bali province, located in the south of the island. It is Bali's most urbanised area and the centre of the island's government and commerce.
Why was Denpasar targeted in Bali's Dharma Dewata crackdown?
Denpasar was targeted as the administrative capital and business hub of Bali, where longer-term commercial activities by foreigners without work permits are concentrated, broadening the Dharma Dewata sweep beyond the tourist zones of Badung.Source: Bali Immigration Office
Is Denpasar the same as Bali's main resort area?
No. Denpasar is Bali's administrative capital and commercial hub in the south of the island, distinct from the main tourist resort areas such as Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu, which are in the neighbouring Badung regency. Dharma Dewata targeted both Denpasar and Badung.

Background

Denpasar is the capital city and administrative centre of Bali, the island province of Indonesia. As one of the three regencies targeted during the Dharma Dewata immigration enforcement operation of April–May 2026, Denpasar was subject to inspections of commercial premises, co-working spaces, and residential properties suspected of housing foreigners working without valid permits .

With a population of approximately 900,000, Denpasar is Bali's most urbanised area and the hub of the island's government, commerce, and transport infrastructure. Unlike Badung (which hosts the tourist areas of Canggu, Seminyak, and Kuta) or the north's Singaraja, Denpasar's foreign-worker population tends to be engaged in longer-term business activities rather than the short-stay STR or hospitality economy.

Denpasar's inclusion in Dharma Dewata signalled that the enforcement sweep covered all Balinese business contexts, not only the beach and digital-nomad café zones of Badung, broadening the operation's deterrence signal.
