US Midterms 2026Background
Dallas County is the north Texas county whose seat is the City of Dallas. With about 2.66 million residents in July 2024 by Census Bureau estimate, it ranks second in Texas to Harris County and eighth in the US. It is distinct from the City of Dallas and from Dallas counties in other states.
The county was one of six local governments that went to court in August 2026 over the Homeland Security Grant Program. FEMA had made a fifth of each state's counterterrorism allocation conditional on three election measures: checking voters through DHS's SAVE System, manually auditing 5% of paper ballots and moving away from voting machines. Its co-plaintiffs were Harris, Travis and El Paso counties, Nashville's metropolitan government and the city of Columbus, Ohio.
A Washington judge, Amir Ali, struck the conditions down on 28 September. Dallas County may still choose its own election procedures; the ruling stops grant money being used to dictate them.
