Connor Metcalfe

Connor Metcalfe was Born on 5 November 1999 in Australia and began his professional career at Melbourne City, making his senior debut in 2017. After more than 70 appearances for the A-League club he moved to FC St. Pauli in Germany in 2022, becoming one of the club's key midfielders across their rise from the 2. Bundesliga to the Bundesliga. St. Pauli were relegated after the 2024-25 season, and Metcalfe remained with the club for their return to the second tier. A box-to-box central midfielder, he has won 36 caps for Australia and made his senior debut in June 2021.

Metcalfe is part of a younger generation of Socceroos establishing themselves in European football. His reading of the game, pressing intensity and ability to arrive late into the box complement Australia's typically high-energy tactical approach under their coaching staff. The 2026 World Cup is his first senior World Cup tournament.

Against Türkiye in Group D on 14 June 2026 in Vancouver, Metcalfe scored Australia's second goal with a powerful low strike in the 75th minute, sealing a 2-0 win that was Australia's first World Cup victory in 24 years. Nestory Irankunda had opened the scoring in the 27th minute. The result set Australia up well in a group that also contains Paraguay and Santa Clara hosts for later fixtures.
