Why is a heavy-equipment giant now a supplier for AI data-centre power plants?
Background
Caterpillar Inc. is an American manufacturer of construction, mining and energy equipment, founded in 1925 from the merger of Holt Manufacturing and c. L. Best Tractor. It has been headquartered in Irving, Texas since 2022, and is the world's largest maker of construction and mining machinery.
Caterpillar's San Diego-based subsidiary Solar Turbines, which builds industrial gas turbines ranging from roughly 1 to 39 MW, is reported to be supplying turbines alongside GE Vernova for Project Kilby, a 2.67 GW gas-fired power facility Chevron is developing in Reeves County, Texas to feed a Microsoft data centre under a 20-year power agreement. The dual-supplier order reflects a wider push to diversify turbine supply as demand for gas-fired data-centre power outstrips manufacturing capacity.
