The Pentagon named two of the soldiers killed in the Iranian missile and drone attack on Azraq air base in Jordan as members of Army Air and Missile Defense Command. Cumulative US military deaths since the war began on 28 February now stand at 17.
The command operates the US Army's ground-based air and missile defence units, the systems that intercept incoming missiles and drones at bases across the region. That role is why its personnel are stationed at forward bases such as Azraq, and why they are among those exposed when Iran targets those bases directly.
Remains recovered at the base earlier in the campaign were still being matched against the missing when this update went to press. The command's losses sit inside the broader run of US casualties from a war fought mostly through allied bases rather than direct US territory.
