Background

American Rheinmetall is the US Arm of German defence prime Rheinmetall, a distinct legal entity from parent Rheinmetall AG and from Rheinmetall Kraken GmbH. On 31 July 2026 it was named prime contractor on Project Sustainment, an 18-month US Army award for hybrid-powered autonomous ground vehicles, executed through the National Advanced Mobility Consortium.

As prime, it assembled a three-firm subcontractor team, one building the vehicle, one its driving software and one its voice interface, and discloses no value for the award. Vice President of Sales and Marketing Jim Schirmer called it an expansion of the company's uncrewed ground systems portfolio.

The legal separation from its German parent and from Rheinmetall Kraken GmbH matters for tracking who actually holds a given contract: this is the US-domiciled entity, and Project Sustainment is its award, not the parent group's.
