Background
Yassine Bounou, known as Bono, saved a first-half penalty from Kylian Mbappe in France's 2-0 World Cup quarter-final win over Morocco on 9 July 2026, though France went on to eliminate the last African side left in the tournament.
Born in Canada to Moroccan parents and raised in Casablanca, Bounou came through Wydad AC before a career mostly spent in Spain, where he won the Zamora Trophy with Sevilla in 2021-22 and the UEFA Europa League twice. He has played for Saudi club Al Hilal since 2023 on a contract running to 2028.
Bounou was a key figure in Morocco's run to the 2022 World Cup semi-final, the first African team to reach that stage, and remains the country's first-choice goalkeeper heading into major tournaments.
