Wesley tore an adductor muscle in Brazil's 7 June 2026 friendly against Egypt and was replaced in the squad by Ederson before the 11 June Deadline, one of four late squad changes across the tournament's entrants.
Wesley signed a five-year contract with Roma from Flamengo in July 2025 and started all but two of his 30 Serie A appearances in his debut season, primarily at right-back though also used as a Left wing-back. He had been named in Carlo Ancelotti's 26-man Brazil squad on 18 May 2026.
The injury removed a player tipped to start at right-back from Brazil's World Cup plans before a ball was kicked, one of several late fitness scares that reshaped squads heading into the tournament.
