Background
V-BAT is a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft system developed by Shield AI, designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions from ships and other confined launch platforms. On 30 March 2026, the Royal Netherlands Navy declared V-BAT operational following Arctic sea trials aboard HNLMS Johan de Witt, making it the first NATO navy to declare the system combat-ready. The Netherlands acquired 12 units, with eight Dutch vessels to be equipped.
V-BAT's VTOL capability enables launch and recovery from vessels without requiring catapult systems or runway infrastructure, filling a capability gap in small and medium-sized NATO naval fleets. The Arctic trials validate the system's performance in high-sea states and low-temperature environments where conventional fixed-wing drones struggle. Shield AI's decision to validate V-BAT through a NATO ally rather than a US Navy programme may reflect procurement timing and the desire to build an operational track record ahead of potential US Navy competitions.
The operational declaration matters for Shield AI beyond the Netherlands contract. A NATO first-in-class operational certification provides the reference customer that defence procurement officers require before recommending systems to their own governments. European naval V-BAT sales will benefit from the Royal Netherlands Navy imprimatur.
