Background

Uelsen draws gas through seven boreholes into Triassic sandstone around 1,490 metres down, a depth and scale that make it the largest pore-type site in Storengy Deutschland's German portfolio, part of the Engie group. It has operated since 1997, with a working gas volume of roughly 860 million cubic metres, sited in Lower Saxony close to the Dutch frontier.

It shares its regulatory tier with five other named sites: the Gasspeicherfüllstandsverordnung sets Uelsen a 45% fill target for 1 November rather than the 80% that applies to most German cavern storage.
