Background
Tunis is the capital of Tunisia, one of five qualified 2026 World Cup nations whose fans face entry bonds of up to $15,000 per person under the US Visa Bond Pilot Programme. The State Department added Tunisia to the programme on 2 April, bringing the total to 50 affected countries.
Tunisia qualified for the World Cup through CAF qualification. Its fans now face a financial barrier equivalent to approximately three years' average Tunisian income to attend matches their national team earned the right to play in. The State Department confirmed on 7 April that it has no estimates for how these bonds will affect attendance.
The contrast with previous tournaments is stark: South Africa waived Visa requirements for all World Cup ticket holders in 2010, enabling 300,000 international visitors. The 2026 host is requiring bonds instead.
