2026 FIFA World CupBackground
Sports Media Watch is a specialist US sports-television ratings tracker whose own arithmetic produced the figure most outlets cited for the 2026 World Cup final.
On 20 July, FOX's network-released total was 42.5 million against a stricter Nielsen average of 38,937,000 (peak 51,685,000, which FOX called the most-watched soccer telecast in US history); Telemundo logged 23.9 million, and the site added the two networks' self-reported totals to reach a combined 66.4 million, of which roughly 49 million is Nielsen-linear . That combined figure superseded the site's own pre-match forecast of 35.2 million for FOX and 22.1 million for Telemundo and Peacock, and ran well ahead of TheWrap's separate preliminary Nielsen report of 22.6 million for the Telemundo-and-Peacock share alone .
The distinction worth holding: 66.4 million is Sports Media Watch's own addition of two networks' separately released, self-reported numbers, not a joint publication and not a total any measurement body has certified.
