Background
Santos is a port city on The Atlantic coast of Sao Paulo state, Brazil, roughly 80 km south-east of Sao Paulo city. Its natural deep-water harbour made it the principal export outlet for Brazil's coffee economy in the nineteenth century, a role it has retained as Latin America's busiest port by cargo volume, handling a significant share of Brazil's soybean, sugar, and manufactured-goods exports.
The city is home to Santos FC, one of Brazil's most storied football clubs. Santos FC won back-to-back Copa Libertadores titles in 1962 and 1963 during the era when Pele was the club's defining player, spending the majority of his senior career there from 1956 to 1974. Neymar began his professional career at Santos FC before moving to Barcelona in 2013, continuing the club's tradition of developing elite attackers. The club's history gives the city a prominence in Brazilian football culture disproportionate to its size.
Santos the city appears alongside the club when Brazil-related football narratives surface: Neymar's inclusion in Brazil's preliminary 55-man squad for the 2026 World Cup reconnects the Santos story to the tournament.
Santos FC's connection to the 2026 World Cup runs through Neymar, who began his career at the club before becoming Brazil's all-time record scorer. Neymar was named in Brazil's 55-man preliminary squad on 9 May 2026, linking the Santos story to the tournament narrative. The city itself is not a host venue for the 2026 tournament.
