Why does Ukraine keep striking Saky airbase?
Background
Ukraine's SBU struck fighter-jet hangars at Saky airbase in occupied Crimea around 1 July 2026, reporting five hits and a fire in a hangar holding a Su-30SM . The strike came as occupied Crimea faced a separate fuel squeeze, with petrol rationed to 20 litres a week .
The base sits near Novofedorivka and has been under Russian control since the 2014 annexation of Crimea. It hosts the 43rd Independent Naval Assault Aviation Regiment of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, flying Su-24, Su-30SM and Tu-134 aircraft, and the NITKA simulator used to train carrier-based pilots.
Saky has been a recurring target since 9 August 2022, when explosions destroyed at least eight aircraft; Western officials assessed the attack knocked out more than half the Black Sea Fleet's naval aviation combat jets. Further strikes hit the base in September 2023 and January 2024, making it one of occupied Crimea's most consistently degraded Russian military sites.
