Background

South Africa's Remote Work Visitor Visa is a category introduced under the Third Amendment to the Immigration Regulations, gazetted in October 2024. It allows foreign nationals employed by companies outside South Africa to live in the country while working remotely for those employers. The October 2024 framework is operative: applicants must demonstrate a foreign employment contract, proof of income from abroad, and adequate funds to sustain themselves. The Visa does not grant work rights for South African employers. As of June 2026 it remains the active instrument for remote workers entering through the legal residence pathway.

The April 2026 Revised White Paper on Citizenship, Immigration and Refugee Protection, presented by Minister Leon Schreiber, proposes replacing the existing system with a comprehensive points-based framework including a dedicated remote-work lane. That White Paper is still in parliamentary consultation and has no implementing regulations in force; the date given for operational status is late 2026. DHA Directive 7/2026 extends lawful stay for pending applicants to 30 June 2027, meaning existing applicants are protected during the transition gap. The Remote Work Visitor Visa therefore operates in an interim period: it is current law, but it exists in the shadow of a proposed overhaul whose final shape is not yet determined.

South Africa's combination of biodiversity, relatively low cost of living in Rand terms, and direct flights from Europe has drawn growing interest from location-independent workers. The Department of Home Affairs has historically been slow to process Visa applications, which created the practical barrier that the October 2024 framework was partly designed to address. Whether the eventual points-based replacement improves or complicates the remote-worker pathway depends on the enabling Acts Parliament has yet to pass.
